Social media is, of course, a fantastic, highly cost-effective way of promoting your brand. Did you know, for example, that by 2019 it is estimated that there will be around 2.77 billion users of social media worldwide, or that, in 2017, more than 70% of internet users were online to use a social network? And, clearly, these numbers are growing all the time.

So, these days, any sort of digital marketing plan without a social media element is unthinkable. But, equally, you need to reach and engage with your audience more effectively than your competitors do. Quality content is important, but so is involving those people you are trying to reach.

Top tips for boosting your social media engagement

Here are some tips to help:

  • Be visual to be seen online

Make imaginative use of graphics, imagery and video (see our separate article on the latter.) Research shows that images lead to an 85% interaction rate on Facebook while boosting retweets by 35%.

  • Games, contests and giveaways

There are various ways of doing this. For instance, you could ask followers to complete a few details, share a favourite story or memory, for a chance to win something. Social media depends on being interactive, and getting people engaged and involved, so this could be a good way to start.

  • Be nosy!

Well, maybe not nosy, exactly, but ask questions all the time to encourage a response, even if it’s just inviting people to share their plans for the weekend. Also consider a Q & A session to give people the chance to comment on your goods and services. Social media is about other people – so don’t shout about your business too much.

  • Monitor, monitor, monitor

Using tools that monitor your social media activity will help you to know what people are saying about your brand. Many have free versions, including Google Alerts, Hootsuite, Topsy and Social Mention, but there are others.

  • Get up close and personal

Don’t be afraid to show your personality on social media, for example by sharing favourite books or films while asking followers to do the same. Or tell your followers how your day has been.
